Lately it seems I can’t get enough of the fashion and beauty emerging from the Hawaiian Islands! As if the scenery isn’t enough, Hawaii offers it’s beautiful culture, shining people, and sizzling hot boho beach fashions! I recently had the privilege of shooting some goodies sent to me by Samantha Howard of Wings Hawaii! Lets face it, Florida doesn’t measure up to Hawaii’s majesty, but Sam’s designs infused with shells, crystals, and sea creatures make the Hawaiian paradise feel nearly palpable!

It is such an inspiration to me when I listen to the stories of how these companies are started by the dreams of people just like me and YOU! This makes me so excited to share with you Sam’s responses to the interview questions I sent her! Enjoy!

How did Wings Hawaii get started?
Wings Hawaii began as a project in college reflecting on the transformation I was experiencing. My original designs were single butterfly wings that were worn as necklaces and bracelets.

What are your designs inspired by?
My jewelry designs are inspired by my daily experiences. These creations are often ways of expressing my feelings, experiences or dreams. For example the thunderbird jewelry was started by a pair of earrings that I dreamt of the night after a truck crashed into the front of our store. When I further researched it, I learned that the significance of the thunderbird in Native American culture symbolizes transformation and rebirth. It was a reminder that from the bad comes the good. Sometimes this is one of the hardest things to see in the moment. So remember to have faith in the fact that all things happens for a reason.  What’s funny about the thunderbird jewelry is that I didn’t even know how trendy thunderbirds were/are. I spend a lot of time chillin’ in the country in Haiku with out tv so I am pretty removed from a lot of fads and trends.

Name three of your favorite clothing/jewelry designers at the moment.
I really love everything that free people does. I understand that this is a group of designers, however I love their aesthetics up, down, backwards and forwards. I also really love Bella Dahl.  I think that the clothes are classy but still flirty and fun. Finally I would have to say that I really admire Ralph Lauren. His style is clean, sophisticated and timeless. He is not someone who feels the need to follow trends, but more someone who has set a standard. He stays true to his style and he is really good- from clothes to paint. I mean is there anything that the man doesn’t do well? (except for the Olympic uniforms…that was bad.) I prefer simple clothes and beautiful jewelry.

Dream vacation spot?
Current dream vaca is Italy. And Greece. And Spain…ok I would love to spend a couple of months sailing and diving the Mediterranean. That has been a long time dream and I will make it happen.

Words of wisdom.
Follow your heart. You’re the only one who can know what you’re really supposed to do.

Favorite quote.
“I believe in pink. I believe that laughing is the best calorie burner. I believe in kissing, kissing a lot. I believe in being strong when everything seems to be going wrong. I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day and I believe in miracles.” ~Audrey Hepburn
